Dr. Ewa Carrier, Assoc. Professor of Clinical Medicine & Pediatrics, University of California at San Diego. Dr. Carrier’s research focuses on stem cell biology and its transplantation to cancer and organ repair. Clinically, Dr. Carrier works on multiple protocols related to stem cell transplant for cancers, such as leukemias, lymphomas and multiple myeloma as well as autoimmune diseases. She participates in the protocols within the NIH-sponsored Clinical Trial Network, and is a member of a NIH-funded national consortium to treat autoimmune diseases with stem cells. Recently, two transplants on patients with lupus erythematosus (SLE) and myasthenia gravis, both conditions in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks itself, were successfully performed at UCSD under Dr. Carrier. Dr. Carrier collaborates on clinical protocols using stem cells for cardiac repair and is involved in implementing protocols for stem cell transplants in type I diabetes. She has published numerous scientific articles and abstracts. |

Dr. Linda Pilarski, Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Nanotechnology and Professor of Oncology, University of Alberta. Dr. Pilarski is Team Leader for a CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) New Emerging Team to develop novel technology for genetic analysis of cancer, an initiative that links four institutions and two provinces in Western Canada and includes biomedical, clinical, engineering and sociology expertise and approaches. Research in the Pilarski lab focuses on understanding cancer, particularly of the immune system, as it occurs in cancer patients themselves, and on developing novel technology focused on better diagnosis and monitoring tools for the clinic. Dr. Pilarski also leads the Alberta Cancer Diagnostics Consortium (ACDC), an initiative with Western Economic Diversification to develop microfluidic device prototypes for molecular diagnosis and monitoring as a “commercialization arm” of the CIHR New Emerging Team. She was an Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Research Fellow, an Associate Editor of the Journal of Immunology, and was Vice-President and then President of the Canadian Society of Immunology from 1993-1997.
